Humacyte gets a U.S. patent covering how Symvess is made and shipped
The Durham bioengineered tissue company says the new patent extends protection for key parts of its platform into 2043.

Humacyte (Nasdaq: HUMA), a Durham biotechnology company that develops bioengineered human tissues, announced on Oct. 28, 2026, the issuance of U.S. Patent No. 12,742,144. The patent covers key aspects of how Symvess, the company's acellular tissue engineered vessel (ATEV), and other bioengineered tissues are manufactured, sterilized, stored and shipped, and it provides protection into 2043.
Symvess is grown from human cells inside a bioreactor bag that houses the vessel through manufacturing, sterilization, storage and shipment, and the bag stays sealed until it is opened in the operating room. The new patent, titled "Systems, Devices and Methods for Engineered Tissue Construct Transport and Containment," covers methods of producing, serializing, storing and shipping the bioreactor and the vessel inside it. It adds to a family of patents and applications on the design and composition of Humacyte's products and how they are made.
"The issuance of this patent significantly strengthens our intellectual property portfolio by extending protection for key aspects of our bioengineering platform into 2043," said Laura Niklason, founder, president and chief executive officer of Humacyte.
Symvess received FDA approval in December 2024 for the vascular trauma indication, and Humacyte says it plans to submit a supplemental application this year to add dialysis access as a second approved use. Other uses remain investigational. The company makes its tissues at an 83,000-square-foot bioprocessing facility in Durham.
