Upstream Biotechnology closes its seed round
The Durham ag biotech startup will use the money to push its SwitchBlade crop-protection platform toward field validation.

Upstream Biotechnology, a Durham plant biotechnology startup, has closed a seed financing round, the North Carolina Biotechnology Center reported on Oct. 29, 2026. LeVert Ventures led the round, with participation from Corteva through its Corteva Catalyst platform, Silver Blue, Middleland Capital's VTC Ventures and other investors. The amount was not disclosed.
The company's SwitchBlade platform controls when a plant switches on disease and stress defenses at the protein-translation level, so protection can kick in when stress appears without slowing normal growth. The approach is based on plant immunity research from Professor Xinnian Dong's lab at Duke University.
"Closing our seed round positions us to build partnerships with major agricultural companies to advance crop resilience traits toward field validation and eventual commercial deployment," said George H. Greene, Ph.D., CEO and co-founder of Upstream Biotechnology.
Upstream plans to use the funds to expand validation across row and specialty crops, strengthen its intellectual property and support partnerships with seed companies. It has programs in soybean, corn, rice and other crops. NCBiotech backed the company with a $200,000 Small Business Research Loan in 2023 and a second $250,000 loan in 2026.
