AMERICAN SpiralWeld Pipe opens a Columbia blasting and coating building Hayco worked on
The 44,000-square-foot building opened Feb. 12, 2026, as AMERICAN says demand for large diameter water transmission pipe keeps rising. Pilot Mountain contractor Hayco says it was on the job from early planning through the final punch list.

Steel pipe gets blasted before it gets coated. On Feb. 12, 2026, AMERICAN SpiralWeld Pipe opened a 44,000-square-foot building for both jobs at its plant in Columbia, South Carolina.
Hayco Construction, a commercial contractor based in Pilot Mountain, N.C., attended the ribbon cutting. Hayco says it worked on the manual blasting and coating building "from early planning through the final punch list," the list of last fixes before an owner takes over a building.
Blasting cleans and prepares the surface of steel pipe before it is coated, AMERICAN said in its announcement. AMERICAN SpiralWeld Pipe is a subsidiary of AMERICAN Cast Iron Pipe Company, which is based in Birmingham, Alabama.
"Demand for large diameter water transmission pipe continues to increase across the country," said John Hagelskamp, senior vice president of sales for AMERICAN Cast Iron Pipe Company. "This facility helps ensure we can continue to grow with our customers and meet their needs well into the future."
Inside, the system collects dust and holds the air at a very low dewpoint to control moisture. Dewpoint is the temperature at which moisture in the air condenses; a low dewpoint means very dry air. The system also captures, filters and reuses the steel grit used for blasting, which AMERICAN says reduces waste.
Construction began in April 2025 and was finished in November 2025, when commissioning, the testing and start-up of the equipment, began, according to AMERICAN. About 15 employees oversee operations in the building.
"We have worked with our contractor and suppliers to customize the facility and equipment to meet our specialized requirements," said Sahil Attri, a mechanical systems engineer with AMERICAN SpiralWeld Pipe. The announcement did not name the contractor.
Columbia is one of three places Hayco says its work is concentrated, along with the Triad and Triangle regions of North Carolina. In a LinkedIn post the day after the opening, Hayco thanked AMERICAN "for trusting Hayco to be part of such a significant investment in your people, your process, and the community."
